The Pascoe Pop Art Facebook competition continues to be a hotly contested event with hundreds of fans voting for their favourite pop art portrait.

The June competition theme was "Kids Pop Art", with the 3 finalists below:

Voting came right down to the wire before Finalist Number 2 just scraped in with 340 votes, Finalist 3 was closely behind on 292 votes and Finalist 1 received 171. Thank you to all contestants, voters and of course, kids who kindly donated their cuteness for the photos!

Well it's wind-down time now. We're putting the final touches on the last of the Christmas orders and making sure they are sent out in time for the big day.

Now my friends (and definitely my mum) will back me up here when I say I am NOT a shopper! Something about walking miles and miles through store after store of beautiful things with beautiful people selling them to you... well it just makes me anxious, grumpy and generally not fun to be around. Even on the rare occasions that I'm cashed up and ready to spend, it's best to leave me to my own devices.

So I've worked out that online shopping is just perfect for me. I've just made my third purchase at an Australian online store called Fully Stoked and I can't recommend them enough. They sell clothing, accessories and toys that are of high quality (T-shirts I have washed hundreds of times are still the same colour and unstretched), affordable and guaranteed sweat-shop free. And to top it all off, the good people running the show send a whopping 30% of their annual profits to global charities! (makes the 10% that we donate to MSF look pretty slack!).

Of course shopping of the online kind can present a few hazards of its own... I particularly seem to have trouble making the connection between the purchases I make and my rapidly declining bank balance... like how I just bought this gorgeous doll made from 100% organic cotton for my God-daughter even though her birthday is not for another 10 months.

Oh well, I figure it is from Fully Stoked, so really it would be a disservice to this world if I did NOT buy it (I can justify anything).

The Dreaming Festival

The Dreaming - Australia's international indigenous festival - is a massive celebration of Indigenous performers, arts and culture held at the Woodford Folk Festival site each June long weekend. The festival offers a fantastic mix of performances, films, forums and art, and leaves you with an overwhelming feeling of pride and respect for the diverse cultures that all Australians have such a unique opportunity to embrace and learn from.

Over the three days/four nights of the festival, you can expect to be entertained by musicians playing anything from funk/reggae, rap, country, and everything in between - some names of note this year were Blue King Brown, Oka and Street Warriors. Fast becoming one of my favourite comedians, Sean Choolburra left us in stitches once again with his high-energy show ending with another contemporary dance routine performed in a lycra wrestling-leotard. Tjupurru, a Brisbane-based international didgeridoo performer playing alongside his 11-year old son Jandamarra, entranced the crowd with awesome electronic beats. I felt honoured to witness much of the traditional dance and ceremony performed by tribes from all corners of Australia, many of which had not been performed outside their country prior to the festival. And finally, my favourite part of the festival, was sitting around one of the many bonfires each night and talking to wonderful people from all walks of life.

The forums we attended were excellent. People like Anita Heiss, Aileen Moreton-Robinson, Aden Ridgeway and Stephen Hagan all provided such an important reminder of how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage and history must be acknowledged and respected by every Australian citizen before we have any chance of moving towards equality in Australia.

The festival was clouded with the death of one of the performers, a dancer from Pormpuraaw, during the opening ceremony. A man in his 30's, it was a stark reminder for the continuation of the festival of the fact that the life expectancy of an Aboriginal man is currently 17 years younger than any other Australian man. Oxfam are currently campaigning on this very issue and are collecting signatures to demand drastic action be taken to close the health gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. So in summary, The Dreaming festival takes you on a wild ride. Over the three days, my feelings peaked and troughed along the lines of feeling completely uplifted, inspired, disgusted, intensely angry, challenged, proud, amazed, ecstatic, humbled, ashamed, sad, refreshed... but above all, highly motivated to make sure I do everything I can in my small circle of influence to challenge stereotypes, reject racism and demand change.

Personally, I'm dreaming of a time when our country decides to grow up and pay well-overdue respect and recognition to the Indigenous peoples and cultures of Australia.

We are now accepting entries for the latest Pop My Art competition.

They don't have to be high resolution professional shots. Pascoe Pop Art donates 10% to MSF...

"There is one illness that is tearing communities apart. This illness affects some 60 million children. What’s more, it’s a killer. At least 5 million children die from its effects every year. This illness is malnutrition."

Thanks to all our customers who purchased their own piece of Pascoe Pop Art in November and December 2006, we have been able to make our first official donation to Medecins Sans Frontieres of 10% of all sales proceeds.

We donated specifically to the MSF 'Malnutrition Appeal' which funnels money directly towards providing urgently-needed food supplements to malnourished children around the world. A new vitamin-rich 'Ready-to-use Therapeutic Food' has been developed which is eaten directly from the packet and thus allows the family to administer it to the child in their own home instead of having to travel away from their homes and livelihoods to get to medical facilities. Furthermore, unlike other milk-powder based supplements, it does not need mixing with water, which has been an ongoing problem in communities with no access to a hygienic water supply.

According to MSF, our donation will "help to set up an ambulatory feeding programme, reaching out to hundreds of vulnerable families".

Woodford 2006

What a fantastic event it is every year. From the 27th December to 2 January every year, a small little town called Woodford just inland from the Sunshine Coast, invites hundreds of thousands of people to camp in a field and have their senses overloaded on fabulous and original entertainment. All kinds of music from all over the world, comedy, dance workshops, craft, stalls, forums on current events and issues... you name it you've got it!

Matt and I just went up for the 27th and 28th. One problem about the festival being so awesome is that its getting more and more popular every year, and closer to New Years gets a bit full on, so we decided to just enjoy it in the warming up stages. Did I say warming up? It was bloody freezing. It poured raining the whole of the first day and night and I was cold! haha though I just noticed the photos don't exactly reflect the bitter cold quite as I remember it!

Some of my favourites...

Tripod - well-known Australian musical comedians that had the audience in stitches from start to finish... their first gig with a mosh-pit packed to the brim, they say.

Troy 'n' Trevelyn - an Aboriginal and Zimbabwean couple based in Brisbane with a great sound - kind of a reggae/funk but with didge and really beautiful vocals from Trevelyn. We actually ran into them again the other day at Tongue n Groove in West End and they seem to go by the name of Banawaran these days. Was a great gig in such a tiny venue.

Batacuda Sound Machine - 12 mad musicians from around the globe creating a massive sound with a high-octane brew of Brazilian groove, afro-beat and raw hip-hop!

That One Guy - yup, that's what he's called. And I really don't know how to describe him. Wait, I'll check the website...
“That 1 guys tunes are ‘eargasms’ lingering sublimely in your subconscious long after the show ends.”

“Like a one-man band plucked from the pages of Dr. Seuss, That 1 Guy delivers earthshaking future funk from 'the magic pipe' to accompany his madcap lyrics about turbo snails, meat storms, and weasel pot pies."

Sean Choolburra - an Aboriginal comedian who gives the audience a blend of hilarious black fella yarns, didgeridoo playing and dancing. I loved it!

My how time flies when you're having fun.

Well 2006 ended pretty well for this chick. We managed to get all our Pascoe Pop Art orders out in time for Christmas, though it got a wee bit hectic there for a while. It was a great feeling when we closed down the computers on the 23rd, knowing our work had been done and we wouldn't have to open them for at least a few days!

Christmas was great. Family gathering at Bush Haven, Bell - my parents' farm 3 hours west of Brissie. Lots of food. Lots of Christmas cheer. Lots of food. Good country home cooking! Weather was extremely bizaar... usually Christmas involves a lot of wingeing (mostly on my part) about how bloody hot it is. Christmas day was very mild this year, and Boxing Day we had the heaters on all day! There was even talk of lighting the fire! Unbelievable.

My lovely housemate, Melissa Gibson, has headed off on global adventures and I must say she is already sorely missed! Mel's in Israel right now, then heading to London, Ireland, Western Europe, then heading back to Oz with a quick month or two stop over in India and Thailand!!

I have to share with you some pics of our little office in Brisbane.

It is really just by chance that Matt stumbled across this place a couple of months ago and it is just perfect for our at-home office – right on the Brisbane river, 10 minutes from the CBD, and our window is level with the tree tops – Australian native eucalypts full of Australian native birds. It doesn’t get much better than that as far as I’m concerned. Although there is a down-side to all this nature… the phrase “The Early Bird Catches The Worm” has so much more meaning to me these days, although I might add they not only catch the worm early, they also like to tell their mates at the other side of the river all about it. The NOISE coming from these colourful little feathered creatures, starting about 5am, is incredible! Not that I really am complaining too much, I have always liked being a bit of an early bird…but 5am starts do take their toll when you’re trying to have grown up conversation at 9.30 at night and all you want to do is go to bed!

Ha ha... Matt and I warming up for our Courier Mail photo shoot! Must say I'm looking particularly feral... I promise I got a little more presentable in time for Mr Courier Mail to show up!

Social Entrepeneurs...

This journey into the economic opportunities offered by the world wide web has really got me thinking of where it can take us (us meaning you, me and the rest of the world). I mean, if two well-educated Aussies can sit in their rented apartment with little more than a couple of laptops and a good internet connection and start a global enterprise with a budget of less than $1000… (ha ha, now you know how loaded we are!)… what amazing opportunities are there then available to others who are far less fortunate than ourselves? So as I’m learning more and more of what the web has to offer, I’m trying to think of ways that to apply this knowledge in ways other than building up my own cash flow.

Fortunately I’m not the only one! (it’s going to be a long while yet before my skills are going to save an under-developed nation!) There are plenty of social entrepreneurs out there and I’m very interested in learning more about them and promoting what they do. This website – www.kiva.org – is an awesome example. This is what they do:

“Kiva lets you connect with and loan money to unique small businesses in the developing world. By choosing a business on Kiva.org, you can "sponsor a business" and help the world's working poor make great strides towards economic independence. Throughout the course of the loan (usually 6-12 months), you can receive email journal updates from the business you've sponsored. As loans are repaid, you get your loan money back.”

The Bashful Blogger

Ok, am slowly getting my head around this whole ‘blogging’ concept. If you’d asked me what Blogging was a couple of months ago, I’d have had images of some cave-man type dude hitting another cave-man type dude over the head with a wooden club (hmm anyone else get that or is it just me?). But being a bit more of an 'internet' chick these days, I asked Google, "What is blogging?" and Google told me "it is the act of writing in one's blog. To blog something is to write about something in one's blog. This usually involves linking to something the author finds interesting on the internet." Ahhh so it's all perfectly clear to me now!

I’m also slowly, shyly, tippy-toeing my way into some online communities… they can be a little intimidating for the first timer!! There are hundreds, sometimes thousands of people on a forum at any given time, communicating with each other. If you’ve got something to say, and I mean anything, it seems you’re bound to find a forum with a very willing membership who are more than ready to listen to you, praise you, bag the shit out of you or simply give you a whole new perspective on things.

I decided to ask some experts – members of art and photography forums - what they think of Pascoe Pop Art portraits. Geez, it’s like turning up to the first day at a new school… the fear of rejection… wanting to make the right impression right from the word go… knowing, just KNOWING, that the “Yeah I’m cool, I know what I’m doing” appearance you’re trying so hard to maintain is going to inevitably come crashing and burning down…

This was the first response I got:

“Yeah they’re not really that great. I definitely wouldn’t want one of them on my wall.”

Ouch, so not a good start! Thankfully, some more comments came through later that were far more encouraging. Extremely encouraging in fact. Phew, made me feel a little better about cracking into the scene... though it's a big, bad world in there! I've got a long way to go, but I'm pretty happy with how much I've learnt so far...

Medecins Sans Frontieres

It’s a small world…

How many times a week do you find yourself saying that? I swear I say it all the time… but then again it may have something to do with the fact that I live in Brisbane – not exactly a heaving metropolis and thus it is perhaps not that crazy that my boyfriend’s best-mate’s mate is my house-mate’s work-mate’s mate. Hmm…

Anyway, I found myself saying it again on Saturday night. I was at a farewell party in one of Vegas’s happening bars (meaning it was crawling with 19-year-olds) and was introduced to a lovely lady, Fiona Terry, who, by the way, has worked for MSF Australia for the past 10 years. No way, we are donating 10% of our profits to MSF. Ok, not too crazy a coincidence I suppose, but certainly was enough of a connection to get a conversation started with a very interesting and intelligent woman.

I took the opportunity of finding out as much as I could about Fiona’s work (poor woman was probably looking forward to a nice relaxing night out with some close friends!). But she was such an inspiration, having devoted her whole working life to global social justice causes, and seemed more than happy to share some stories with me. She has been stationed in so many hot spots including Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan and the North Korean border. And she gave me a glimpse into a completely new perspective to the provision of international aid. I’m not even going to try to pretend I understand it at the moment, but I plan to do a lot more reading on the subject to enlighten myself a little more.

Fiona has written a book called “Condemned to Repeat: The Paradox of Humanitarian Action” – possibly not the lightest of bed-time reading, but I’m going to see if I can get through it. I just found a couple of interesting articles on her work also, including this one, which I found quite interesting.

I love it when you meet someone who really inspires you and reminds you how much potential every human being has to make a difference in the world.

Doctors Without Borders

This is my favourite part about starting up the business. Even before we had the personalised Pop Art idea, Matt and I were tossing around business ideas with the intention of diverting a percentage of profits to charitable organisations. We’ve got a few more ideas on the boil of how we’d like to do this (and encourage more businesses to do it). But for now, we are really happy to be donating 10% of our sales proceeds to Médecins Sans Frontières, Doctors Without Borders. They are a fantastic organisation and one that has had a huge impact in times of crises worldwide.

We’ll be publishing a cumulative total of donations made to Doctors Without Borders on the website. It will be great to watch that number grow! Keep an eye out for it soon.

It started with a family photo…

The idea for Pascoe PopArt really started when I had a family photo printed on canvas for Mum for her birthday. The whole process was done online – did a google search, found a canvas printer (Brilliant Prints) that seemed really professional, emailed my photo and two days later had a high quality, framed canvas in my hot little hands – the Derrick kids never looked so good! Needless to say it was a hit with Mum.

Both Matt and I were so impressed with the service, professionalism and quality that this printing service offered… we didn’t even have to pay for it until we saw the final work. Of course, they were guaranteed repeat business from us for their efforts, and we couldn’t help but want to spread the word about them.

So it really got us thinking about the best way to run a business online. Most businesses seem to entice their customers with false promises and low prices, only to catch them out later with fine print and bad quality. But we figure, if you are offering a service that you actually believe in, and operate honestly and professionally, you’re going to have customers who not only want to buy from you again, but they want to tell their friends about you too! You couldn’t get a better marketing strategy than that as far as I’m concerned.

So, these were the kind of conversations we were having, but we had no idea how far it was going to take us!

From little things, big things grow…

Picture this… Matt and Rachel sitting on a bus. Bus pulls up in front of a bar. Rachel comments on the artwork – some funky pop-art paintings of celebrities mounted on canvas. (Rachel still in her obsession with canvas prints, wants to have everything printed on canvas). “Wouldn’t it be awesome to see your own photo up on the wall as art like that”, says Rachel, as she looks at Kate Moss’s pop-art portrait (the fact that Kate Moss is, oh, a world super model, and Rachel is, well, just Rachel, was inconsequential to Rachel as she started picturing the transformation her own portrait would undoubtedly make). “Not a bad idea”, says Matt.

And Matt being a man of acting on his words, (Rachel would have just talked about it for a while), didn’t let the idea stop there. Some brainstorming sessions on the deck that night over a few cold beverages, and well, here we are!
